Frederick W. Higgins Elementary was built in 1930. The school's enrollment declined only slightly from 2001 to 2006 - 10% - but at only half of its capacity, was considered underutilized. Higgins closed at the end of the 2006 school year.
Through 2010, Higgins Elementary was on the wrong end of a tug-of-war with Detroit's scrappers. The anti-vandal paneling was torn off every few weeks, replaced, and then torn off again.
The school was demolished in 2014.
