Lonaconing Silk Mill / Klotz Throwing Company

The Lonaconing Silk Mill is a historic textile mill located in the Georges Creek Valley of western Maryland. Once part of a network of clothing manufacturers that dotted the northeastern United States, the Lonaconing Silk Mill is the last remaining factory of its type in the country.

Originally known as the Klotz Throwing Company, the mill took raw silk and refined it into thread for garment manufacturers. The plant closed in 1957, but has been preserved from ruin by Herb Crawford, a local resident who bought the mill in hopes of attracting another clothing manufacturer. Today he offers tours of the mill to photographers to defray the cost of upkeep, and can be contacted directly by phone at (301) 268-1168.
