Craig Key House

Along Route 1 through the middle of the Florida Keys is an unfinished house that has puzzled those passing by for decades. Craig Key was originally a right-of-way for the railroad the connected the Florida Keys, home to cottages and the small town of Craig. Two artificial islands were built on the north side of the key, with several houses on each.

Construction on the 2,500 square foot house on the south island appears to have begun in 1995 before stopping due to issues with permits. Work continued intermittently through the early 2000’s, and as recently as 2006 the owners were working with an engineer to bring the structure into compliance, but by 2008 local authorities had had enough and ordered the house to be demolished. The fate of the property has been tied up in the courts ever since, though it has been put up for sale several times.
