National Acme was a manufacturer of machine tools based out of Cleveland, OH. In 1916 the company built a sprawling factory on the city’s east side and grew through mergers and acquisitions. Starting in the 1980’s, however, the company faced competition from overseas firms and pivoted to communications and technology. In 1995 the company sold of its tool making business to a competitor, which vacated the building sometime in the 2000’s.
In 2011 the factory was leased to a company that wanted to use it to recycle cardboard, but instead filled it with trash. The owners were eventually charged with fraud and operating a landfill without a license.
