The Hotel Fort Wayne was built in 1926 on the corner of Cass and Temple. Ownership changed in the 1930's, and the hotel was eventually renamed the American Hotel.
The American Hotel closed in the 1990's. Like the nearby Eddystone and Harbor Light hotels, it has remained empty. The hotel's location in the Cass Corridor - an area slated for redevelopment - has led to speculation about its future. According to a March 19th article by the Detroit News, nearby properties are being quietly purchased and refinanced in advance of the anticipated light rail system. The owner of the hotel told the paper that while he hadn't been approached about selling, "If someone wants to make me an offer, I'd be more than happy to listen."
